R. Kelly Chicago sexual abuse charges dropped, but may never leave prison
The Cook County state’s attorney says ‘ justice has been served ’ formerly and the decision will let her concentrate ‘ limited ’ coffers on helping victims in other cases
A top Chicago prosecutor said her office will be dropping sexual abuse charges against R. Kelly because the songster is formerly likely to spend the rest of his life in captivity following his persuasions in civil courts.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said she’ll ask a judge on Tuesday to dismiss charges of irritated felonious sexual assault and irritated felonious sexual abuse that her office filed against Kelly in 2019.
Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was condemned of coitus trafficking and wrongdoing by a New York civil court in 2021, and latterly doomed to 30 times in captivity. After a separate trial in Illinois, a civil jury set up Kelly shamefaced in September of three counts of pressing minors into sexual exertion and three counts of producing coitus videotapes involving a minor.

His sentencing in that case is anticipated coming month, and he faces a minimum of 10 to 90 times in captivity, according to prosecutors there.
Under these conditions, and facing what she described as “ limited ” coffers, Foxx on Monday said she made the decision to drop her office’s charges against Kelly, and to rather concentrate on chancing “ justice for other victims of sexual abuse. ” “Mr. Kelly is potentially looking at noway walking out of captivity again for the crimes that he’s married, ” Foxx said at a news conference. “ We believe that justice has been served. ”
A counsel representing Kelly, Jennifer Bonjean, told the Associated Press she was “ pleased ” with the prosecutors ’ decision. “ He only has one life to give. So I do n’t know how numerous rulings upon rulings would satisfy people, ” Bonjean
added.
Kelly is being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, records show. The move to drop state charges in Illinois is the rearmost development in a times-long legal battle to hold Kelly responsible for what prosecutors have described as his decades-long sexual and physical abuse of women and girls. Over the course of Kelly’s civil trial in New York, 11 appellants witnessed against him, and some 50 substantiations handed substantiation. Kelly has denied the allegations and said he plans to appeal his conviction.

The Cook County prosecutors intimately called for any victims to come forward, and in erecting their case, reckoned on the evidence of three appellants — two of whom were minors when they said Kelly constantly sexually abused them — and the evidence of a substantiation who gave the State’s Attorney Office a videotape said to have shown Kelly having coitus with a 14- time-old girl.
On Monday, Foxx who has said that she’s a survivor of sexual assault — praised the appellants ’ “ courage ” in coming forward with their stories, and conceded that her decision to drop the charges against Kelly “ may be disappointing ” to “ those seeking to have their day in court then, in Illinois. ”
Dropping the charges doesn’t mean prosecutors view the appellants ’ evidence as any lower “ believable, ” Foxx said. “ occasionally, justice is served — indeed when there’s no conviction, ” she added. But she conceded that while some of the appellants were satisfied with the outgrowth, others were not. The Cook County State’s Attorney Office filed its charge against Kelly in 2019, after the release of the Continuance talkie “ SurvivingR. Kelly, ” which featured several of his appellants. But the allegations had been an open secret long before that, according to colorful news examinations, including from the Chicago Sun- Times.
In 2008, Kelly was acquitted of child- pornography crimes. The Washington Post reported in 2018 that “ for further than two decades, the recording assiduity turned a eyeless eye to Kelly’s geste
as his career continued to thrive and he was swung every luxury of a map- beating megastar. ”
Kelly still faces harlotry charges in Hennepin County,Minn. but, like the Cook County case, the civil trials against Kelly have taken priority.
