LG To Release An XR Device Early 2025

An XR “device” is scheduled for release as early as next year by LG Electronics.

A reporter from the South Korean news website The Guru received confirmation of the proposal from the company’s CEO, Cho Joo-wan.

It’s actually unclear if Cho was referring to one “device” or several “devices” because Korean doesn’t make a clear distinction between the two in the context of the quotation.

According to Cho, The Guru, in an effort to “speed up development,” LG Electronics has transferred the development of XR devices inside the TV manufacturing division.

In VR, LG had a relatively brief history. It debuted a small smartphone-tethered headgear for 360° video watching in 2016 to unfavorable reviews, then in 2017 it unveiled a prototype PC-tethered SteamVR headset that was never supplied.

What will this new headset be specifically made of?

Presumably the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 was unveiled earlier this month, and the new “high end” XR chipset from Qualcomm was first reported on by the South Korean news outlet ETNews in October.

Qualcomm revealed that XR2+ Gen 2 will power a number of devices, including Sony’s enterprise “spatial content creation” headset, Immersed’s Visor, Samsung’s future Google-powered headset, an unannounced new HTC Vive headset, a YVR headset in China, and others.

It’s noteworthy, though, that LG was also identified in the ETNews article as a possible buyer of the new chipset.

Is Quest Pro 2 a Collaboration with Meta?

Notably, Meta is not included in Qualcomm’s list, even though Meta is the launch partner for the base XR2 Gen 2, XR2+ Gen 1, and XR2 Gen 1. If other stories are to be believed, LG may be partially to blame for this.

SBS Biz, a South Korean news agency, stated in 2022 that Meta had started discussions with LG Display to secure the supply of OLED microdisplays for upcoming headsets.

A third South Korean news source, Maeil Business Newspaper, said in September that LG and Meta were collaborating to produce Quest Pro headphones in the future.

According to the report, the partnership’s initial headset is expected to launch in 2025 and cost approximately $2000, in line with the CEO’s statement.

With LG’s hardware experience, a collaboration may be Meta’s strategy to produce a genuinely high-end headset that can compete with Apple Vision Pro and the upcoming Samsung headset that will run Google software.

To be clear, the Meta cooperation is still just a rumor. As of right now, LG has only formally stated that it plans to deliver an XR gadget as early as next year.

Gemini To Get Assistant Routines

Assistant Routines may soon be supported on Gemini, according to an APK dissection of the Google app.
One of the main reasons so many are using Google Assistant rather than signing up for Gemini is that it lacks routines.
Regretfully, neither the precise integration of Routines into Gemini nor the possible release date are known

Google first launched Google Assistant Routines back in 2017. You can use this functionality to perform several actions with a single voice command. Saying “Hey Google, let’s watch a movie,” for instance, would cause Assistant to simultaneously turn out the lights, switch on the TV, and put your phone in do not disturb mode.

Even while Google is pitching Gemini, its generative AI-powered assistant, as a replacement for Google Assistant, Gemini still lacks Routines-like functionality. Fortunately, that might not last long.

Based on work-in-progress code, an APK breakdown assists in forecasting features that might be added to a service in the future. It’s possible, though, that these anticipated features won’t be released to the general public.

The Google app for Android is now in beta version 15.24.28.29.arm64 beta. We discovered a work-in-progress page that makes explicit reference to Assistant Routines and how Gemini would support them. This page is viewable in the screenshot below, which we must stress is a work in progress:

Assistant Routines

Based on the information available on this website, it seems that Gemini will not be getting its own Routines system—at least not quite yet. Rather, it seems that Gemini will allow you to manage Assistant Routines. It will be awkward because you will have to use Assistant to create new routines and Gemini to activate them, but at least it’s an improvement over nothing.

While there are many additional features that Assistant can perform that Gemini cannot, one of the main drawbacks that keep Android users from fully committing to Gemini is likely the inability to control routines. If nothing else, this APK disassembly demonstrates Google’s ongoing efforts to bring Gemini’s features up to line with Assistant.

Regretfully, we are unsure of the timeline for when this functionality will be activated. However, given that it’s showing up in beta code, we anticipate it to be available in a few weeks or months.
