Google Pixel Devices Facing Storage Issues After Update

After few customers encountered a storage access issue with the initial Android 14 release in October, Pixel devices may now be experiencing an additional issue with the January 2024 Google Play System Update.

Users say that after installing the January 2024 Google Play system update—which is not the same as the January 5, 2024 security update/patch—they are unable to access data from internal storage in any app. This causes a number of cascading problems, such as the Files app appearing empty and making it unable to shoot fresh photos or play downloaded music or video files. Some applications won’t function at all.

This sounds a lot like the problem that affected devices with multiple users enabled last year. But it looks like having the Google Play system update loaded is the problem today.

However, the majority of Pixel (and other Android) users are still using the November 2023 release, therefore the January 2024 upgrade is not yet generally available. (You may verify by going to System & updates > Security & privacy > Settings app.) That should prevent the problem from affecting other users because Google can simply stop the distribution.

Owners of the Pixel 8, 7, and 6 series are also reporting this issue.

How Google fixes the issue for users who have installed it is still unknown. A system update was required the last time. Your device’s data might be retrieved via the previously described OTA if it wasn’t caught in a “Pixel is starting” boot loop.
